THE LIGHTKEEPER FAMILY GUIDES

How to start the conversation about care

A useful place to start, wherever your family is right now.

Choose a calm moment. Ask what feels difficult, rather than listing everything you think is wrong. Offer a specific, small starting point: company during lunch or help getting ready for the day. Make the person receiving care part of every decision.

Choose a calm moment, and ask permission.

A conversation over lunch may be easier than one in the middle of a difficult task. Try: ‘Could we talk about making the mornings a little easier?’ Give the person time to respond. A decision about their home and routine should include their voice from the beginning.

Start with what you noticed.

Use one concrete observation without a verdict: ‘You mentioned the laundry is getting tiring.’ Then ask what they think. Avoid arriving with a list of everything you believe is wrong. You may learn that the task you were worried about is manageable, while a different part of the day is wearing them out.

Offer a small, defined kind of help.

‘Would someone making lunch with you on Tuesdays help?’ is easier to consider than a vague proposal to bring in care. Talk about which tasks they would welcome help with, which they want to keep doing and what would make them comfortable with a new person in the home.

Leave room for another conversation.

If they are hesitant, ask what concerns them: cost, privacy, independence or the idea of a stranger arriving. Listen before offering a solution. You can gather information together without committing to a schedule. Agree on what to explore next and when to revisit it.

Take the next step together.

Write down the routines you want to protect and the tasks where help would ease the day. Ask the person receiving care what matters most. Bring that list to your first conversation with a provider.

You can begin with questions. You don’t need a finished plan.
